Summary

Description

Sonja Bach is an architecture student from Cologne, Germany (1). She is 23 years old, lives alone in a cheap student apartment in the city center and loves interior design, which is why she picked architecture for her studies (2). As a perfectionist Sonja always tries to get the best out of a room and it’s furniture (3). She spends very much time with her projects and likes to discuss them with friends and colleagues to get feedback and improve her designs further (4). For her, interior design is modern art (5). For her projects she mostly uses free online tools or pen and paper because better programs / online tools for interior design are very expensive (6). Sometimes her unviersity gives out temporary licences for certain modules but most of the time she has to find methods and tools on her own (7). This is very frustrating for her as she is - as said - perfectionistic and therefore quickly frustrated when measurements or designs are not totally accurate or fitting (8). She changes a lot when using pen and paper which is why she spends a lot of time and money on new resources (9). For sketches, Sonja recently bought a drawing tablet and she also uses Photoshop sometimes (10). All in all she has a good understanding of technology and knows how to use MS Office and other common tools (11). She really wishes for easier methods of designing rooms - programs where you can easily undo mistakes (12). Also sharing her work is very important for her because she, as said, likes to get feedback from many people (13). For this she often uses the camera of her iPhone (14). She mostly bought an apple product because of the good camera so the pictures of her paper work are as good as possible so others get a realistic impression of her work (15). With online tools though Sonja has an easier method of sharing her work which she finds very useful (16). This is another reason why she is so frustrated about good tools being so expensive (17). Her goals are to get more creative in projects (18). With pen and paper this is not ideally done because it takes much time and effort to change details (19). If she could easily move things and try stuff out, she could do more in less time which would improve her work, she thinks (20). Also Sonja not only likes to sketch designs, she also loves to try them out in real life (21). Each month she redecorates her own apartment to try out new styles (22). She thereby spends a lot of money on new furniture and sells old pieces via second hand apps (23). Anyway she would love to try out real life designs more often and more flexibly because the other designs on paper or in virtual tools do not meet her expectations of accuracy (24). Whenever a friend moves or wants to redecorate a room, Sonja is ready for work (25). She loves her profession and dreams of being an interior design artist which is known globally (26).
